Alignment of Naval Guns

The alignment of weapons with sensors (radars and directors) is a fundamental requirement for the effectiveness of combat systems on warships. For this reason, crews conduct periodic Dynamic Alignment Tests to measure and compensate for various alignment errors, with the ultimate goal of maximizing the probability of a successful first strike against enemy targets.

Boresighting Cameras

The bore-sighting cameras of MEFF are designed for aligning the guns of warships. Their long-term use by the Hellenic Navy has proven their reliability even in the most adverse maritime and weather conditions. These cameras, in combination with one of the measurement and recording systems (see below), ensure the alignment of the guns with the sensors, thus dramatically improving the effectiveness of the Fire Control Systems.

  • NSN GUN 40mm: 1240231142741

WALS - Weapons Alignment System

WALS (Weapon Alignment System) is a video registration equipment used in Dynamic Alignments. It combines images from 4 bore-sighting cameras and one radar (director) camera onto a common monitor. Electronic crosshairs of adjustable position are electronically superimposed onto the images from the bore-sighting cameras, which the operator places on their optical centers. Then, after locking onto a target with the radar, the necessary adjustments are made to the Fire Control System to achieve optimal alignment of the weapons.

The entire process can be recorded (with video and audio) into a digital file, which may be utilized as a technical reference or for educational purposes.

SWAT - Sensors & Weapons Alignment Terminal

SWAT (System for Weapon Alignment Terminal) is an integrated computing recording system for Dynamic Alignment Checks. It includes bore-sight cameras, a central processing unit, and a laptop with specialized software. The system:

  • Measures alignment and stabilization errors
  • Calculates corrections to WDS (Weapon Direction System) parameters
  • Generates technical reports
  • Optimizes WDS performance.

SWAT provides portability, is easy to install, and features a user-friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface).
